Who is Walk and Talk Therapy a Good Fit For?

Walk and talk therapy is a good option for many problems clients are coming to therapy for.

These problems include things like:

  • ADHD

  • Anxiety

  • Trauma

  • Grief and/or depression

It’s especially helpful for clients who:

  • Feel uncomfortable with eye contact

  • Have trouble staying present during a conversation

  • Feel anxious about opening up in therapy

  • Want to include more physical activity in their life

  • Are interested in the mind-body connection

  • Have felt pressured to share in past counseling

  • Are looking for a less “formal” and more casual and laid-back therapy experience

The physical act of moving forward together can be great for the therapeutic relationship and for mental health in general.

Engaging in outdoor activities promotes the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters that improve mood and reduce stress.

You’ll find that this experience of therapy is different than being in therapy in an office!

If that’s the type of counseling experience you’re looking for, you’re in the right place.

Walk and Talk Therapy Can Bring Relief When You’re Experiencing Anxiety

If you’re struggling with anxiety, walk and talk therapy can be a game-changer.

Regular movement helps to increase your strength and stamina, improves self-esteem, reduces feelings of anxiety and depression, and helps you sleep better.

Physical activity has been shown to improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.

Exercise also releases endorphins, which are natural mood-boosters. As you walk side by side with your therapist, you’ll find that the conversation flows more naturally, and you’ll feel more at ease discussing your concerns.

The act of walking can help you get “unstuck” when confronting difficult emotions or experiences.

By combining the benefits of physical activity and talk therapy, walk and talk therapy provides a unique and effective approach to managing anxiety.

FAQs About Walk and Talk Therapy in Frisco

Is walk and talk therapy confidential?

All of the normal confidentiality expectations of therapy sessions still apply. However, there is a risk when participating in walk and talk therapy. Because we are outside and walking, there is no guarantee we won’t be overheard. We will take every necessary and common-sense precaution to prevent violations of confidentiality, but I can’t promise the content of our conversations will be 100% private.

I don’t know if I need walk and talk counseling. Can’t I work through things on my own?

I understand feeling like you should be able to work through challenges on your own. Many people share that sentiment. At the same time, you’re clearly suffering and want your situation to improve. Just as we get help from professionals for our physical health, it makes sense to get support for our mental health too. When you break your arm, it usually doesn’t heal well if you ignore it. It’s the same with your mental health. I can offer tools and perspective to help you make changes that you may find difficult to do alone.

Will talking about my problems during walk and talk therapy actually help? Isn’t it just complaining?

It’s true that just complaining isn’t very helpful. Therapy for anxiety is a process of building insight, skills and understanding to create tangible change. Through exercises like identifying thoughts, practicing difficult behaviors, or rewriting unhelpful narratives about yourself, you can start to shift old patterns. I will challenge you during anxiety therapy to move beyond complaining into doing the necessary work. My goal is to help you transform your thoughts, feelings and behaviors so you can build the life you want.

What if I open up during counseling, but nothing really changes?

It’s understandable to fear that opening up won’t ultimately help you. True change requires some risk-taking, and effort from both of us. I will create a nonjudgmental space for you to share authentically during your time in anxiety counseling. In return, I ask you to commit to applying what you learn outside of our sessions. With consistent practice of new skills, you can absolutely create lasting change. I will be there to support you through both breakthroughs and setbacks.
